What is AI visibility, and does a small business need it?

Customers now ask ChatGPT and Google's AI which clinic, contractor or agency to call. What it takes to be the answer, in plain terms, and whether it is worth a small business's time yet.

AI visibility, sometimes called answer engine optimisation, is being the business an AI assistant names when someone asks it for a recommendation. It rests on the same foundations as local search: a clear, factual website, consistent details across the web, real reviews, and content that answers specific questions directly. A small business does not need a separate AI strategy; it needs those foundations done well.

A growing share of "who should I call" questions now go to an AI assistant instead of a search box. The assistant answers with two or three names. This article is about how it picks them.

How an assistant chooses a business

Assistants read the open web and lean on the sources that look reliable: your website, your Google Business Profile, directories, review sites and articles that mention you. They favour pages that state facts plainly (what you do, where, for whom, from what price) over pages that describe themselves as "leading" and "innovative". They prefer answers to questions over brochure copy.

What that means in practice

  • Say what you do in the first paragraph. Service, city, customer type, starting price. If a machine cannot summarise your home page in one sentence, neither can a customer.
  • Answer real questions on your site. "How much does a dental implant cost in Jeddah?" is a page. So is "Do you deliver to Khobar?". Short, direct, dated.
  • Keep your details identical everywhere. The same name, address, phone number and opening hours on the website, the Business Profile and every directory.
  • Collect reviews that mention specifics. "Fast, friendly" helps less than "fixed our POS in a day and trained the staff".
  • Mark up the facts. Structured data tells machines which text is an address, a price or a question and answer. It is invisible to visitors and worth doing on every page.

Does a small business need it yet?

Not as a separate project. Everything above is also what local search rewards, so a business that does it well is visible in both places. Where it changes priorities is content: the questions your customers ask on WhatsApp are the pages you should write next, in Arabic and English, with a plain answer at the top.

How we handle it

Our marketing retainers include the structured data, the question pages and monthly checks on what assistants say when asked about your category in your city. The report is in plain language, so you can see whether you are being recommended, and by which assistants, without needing to understand how any of it works.

Have a question we have not answered?

Ask it on WhatsApp. A person replies, usually within the hour during business hours, and the good questions become the next article.
